Steel Standards

Find standards families for flat steel, coated sheet, pipe, tube, bar and wire, plus dimensional tolerances and EN 10204 inspection documents.

Which standard family do you need?

Choose the product and intended use first. Then separate the product specification, dimensions/tolerances and inspection document. A steel-family name or coating label rarely identifies all three.

The maps below point to related scopes across ASTM, EN and JIS. A shared row is not grade equivalence. Record the contract edition, type and grade before comparing acceptance requirements.

Use the actual product, thickness, width and tolerance category to locate the limits. For pipe , a size/schedule system and a product specification do different jobs. For coated flat stock, explicitly distinguish base-metal and total-coated thickness.

Inspection documents: EN 10204

EN 10204 identifies inspection-document types for metallic products. Specify the required document with the order, together with the tests and acceptance requirements it must record.

Match the delivered heat/coil identity, grade, dimensions and condition to the record. A type 3.1 document request is an inspection-document choice, not a substitute for the material specification.

A standard-reading workflow

For a galvanized forming coil, first locate the zinc-coated sheet product family. Select its forming grade and zinc designation. Next identify dimensional requirements for that coated product, including thickness basis. Finally agree inspection evidence and keep all fields in the order.

The steel coil specification decoder shows this as one example. The Steel Types hub helps separate supply form, alloy family, process and coating before choosing a standards family. This directory paraphrases public scopes; it does not reproduce paid standards or their acceptance tables.

Combine the product, dimensional and inspection requirements using the complete steel sheet and coil specification guide .

Sheet thickness and tolerance references

Editions checked on 20 September 2026. Use the edition agreed in the order; the documents below cover different product families, not one interchangeable tolerance table.

  • ASTM A568/A568M-25a : General requirements for applicable hot- and cold-rolled carbon, structural and HSLA sheet. The product specification prevails in a conflict; SI and inch-pound requirements are separate systems.
  • ASTM A924/A924M-26 : General requirements for continuous hot-dip metallic-coated sheet. Scope 1.8 counts base steel plus metallic coating; scope 1.10 keeps SI and inch-pound systems separate.
  • BS EN 10051:2024 : Applicable continuously hot-rolled wide strip and sheet/plate cut from it.
  • BS EN 10131:2006 : Applicable cold-rolled uncoated and electrolytically coated flat products.
  • BS EN 10143:2006 : Applicable continuously hot-dip coated steel sheet and strip.

AS/NZS 1365:1996 (R2016)

Dimensional tolerances for flat-rolled products within its scope: thickness, width, length and shape. Classes A and B are distinguished, with B more stringent. Stainless, high-alloy and quenched-and-tempered steels are outside its scope. For coated products, thickness tolerances apply to the base metal.
