What is steel coil?
Steel coil is a continuous strip wound into a roll for storage, transport and feeding into a production line. A service centre can slit it into narrower coils or level and cut it into sheets. A fabricator can feed the strip directly into stamping, tube-making or roll-forming equipment.
Coil describes the supply form. The material inside may be carbon steel, stainless steel or another grade; its rolling route and coating are additional fields.
Types
Hot-rolled coil supplies general fabrication stock and feedstock for further processing. Cold-rolled coil adds cold reduction and a specified final condition. Metallic-coated products include galvanized and 55% Al-Zn steel. Prepainted coil adds a paint system over a metallic-coated substrate.
These descriptions fit together. A product can be cold-rolled carbon steel, galvanized and then prepainted. The Steel Types directory maps form, material, process and coating separately.
Dimensions: ID, OD, width and thickness
ID is the diameter of the central opening and must fit the uncoiler mandrel. OD measures the outside of the wound roll. Width is the axial strip dimension; thickness is the section through the strip, with coating inclusion stated. Net coil weight excludes the pallet, wrapping and straps.
The receiving line has separate limits for mass, OD, width and ID. A coil can fit the mandrel and still exceed the line’s weight capacity. For slit strip , edge condition and camber become especially important. For cut sheets , the relevant output dimensions include length, squareness and flatness.
Specifications
Anatomy of a steel coil specification
The following is an illustrative order decoder, not a stocked product or a claim of test results. Dimensions and handling limits are example purchaser requirements. Complete tolerances and acceptance criteria before placing an order.
| Field | Example entry | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Base steel | Low-carbon forming steel | Substrate selected for the intended bending operation. |
| Grade | DX51D | Grade under the named EN product specification. |
| Thickness | 0.80 mm BMT | Base-metal thickness; specify its tolerance separately. |
| Width | 1,000 mm, trimmed | Nominal feed width and edge condition. |
| Coating | +Z275 | Zinc coating designation under EN 10346. |
| Surface | Minimized spangle; oiled | Agree surface quality, oil and later painting compatibility. |
| Coil ID | 508 mm | Example mandrel interface requirement. |
| Coil weight | 5,000 kg maximum net | Example handling limit, separate from OD limit. |
| Standard | EN 10346; EN 10143 for dimensions | Record the contract editions and tolerance choices. |
| Inspection | EN 10204 type 3.1 requested | Link coil identification to agreed material and coating results. |

The grade/coating format follows ArcelorMittal’s galvanized product reference . DX51D identifies a forming grade; Z275 identifies zinc coating mass. The rest of this example records practical ordering fields rather than reproducing a standard’s requirements.

Coatings
Record the coating chemistry before its mass. Zinc, 55% aluminum-zinc and Zn-Al-Mg use different alloys. A both-side mass of 275 g/m² means coating mass per square metre of sheet area summed across the two faces. It is distinct from steel thickness and paint dry-film thickness.
Use the coating converter for units. Use the product standard for designation acceptance. For painted material, name the exposed-face primer/topcoat and reverse-face system separately.
Grades and standards
The grade establishes mechanical and chemical requirements within a product specification. The dimensional document supplies the tolerance framework, and an inspection document records the ordered evidence. These three jobs belong to different documents; the standards hub shows where to begin.
ASTM A653/A653M covers zinc and zinc-iron coated sheet; A792/A792M covers 55% Al-Zn sheet. A coating designation from one family is not a replacement for the other family’s product requirements.
Processing and receiving checks
Uncoiling feeds the strip; slitting changes width; cut-to-length processing adds levelling and shearing; roll forming changes the cross-section. The HRPO and annealing references explain surface preparation and treatment condition.
On receipt, match the coil label to the order and inspection record. Check net weight, dimensions, winding condition and visible edge or surface damage. Keep that identity with slit coils and cut bundles. For a stained or scratched area, record its location and extent before evaluating it against the agreed surface criteria.
Calculators
The coil calculator estimates weight, length, OD and PIW. For rectangular blanks, use the plate calculator . A gauge designation first needs a material-specific thickness lookup.
