Calculator
Choose round pipe, square tube or rectangular tube, then enter outside dimensions, wall thickness, length and quantity. Results update while typing; changing units converts entered dimensions. Density always stays in kg/m³.
NPS / Pipe Schedule Lookup
Nominal dimensions only; not a pressure rating.
Geometry and formulas
NPS and DN are nominal size designations, not measured bore diameters. OD is outside diameter; ID is the calculated bore. For a given NPS, OD stays fixed while Schedule changes nominal wall thickness and therefore ID. Select NPS / DN and an available Schedule, then apply the dimensions to the round calculator. The lookup uses carbon-steel columns only, not 10S / 40S / 80S stainless schedules.
| Section | Cross-sectional area (mm²) |
|---|---|
| Round pipe / tube | π × t × (OD − t) |
| Square tube | B² − (B − 2t)² |
| Rectangular tube | W × H − (W − 2t) × (H − 2t) |

Dimensions in mm, length in mm; internal mass in kg. 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Multiply kg/m by 0.3048 / 0.45359237 to obtain lb/ft. Results retain calculation precision; the panel displays English-style decimal points and thousands separators.
Worked examples
- Round pipe / tube: OD 60.3 mm × t 3.91 mm; L 6,000 mm; ρ 7,850 kg/m³; n = 2 → ID 52.48 mm; S 692.6737 mm²; 5.43749 kg/m; 32.6249 kg × 2 = 65.2499 kg.
- Square tube: B 50 mm × t 3 mm → S 564 mm²; 4.4274 kg/m.
- Rectangular tube: W 80 mm × H 40 mm × t 3 mm → S 684 mm²; 5.3694 kg/m.
Density assumptions
Carbon steel 7,850; stainless steel 7,900; galvanized base steel 7,850 kg/m³. Alloy and tool steel use 7,850 kg/m³ where offered. These are estimating presets: grade, chemistry and temperature matter. A custom positive density overrides the preset.
| Material | Density (kg/m³) |
|---|---|
| Carbon Steel | 7850 |
| Stainless Steel | 7900 |
| Galvanized Steel | 7850 |

Measurement and limitations
Measure actual OD or outside width and height, wall thickness and finished length when available. Square and rectangular formulas assume sharp, ideal corners: real corner radii, weld seams, manufacturing tolerances and actual grade density change mass. Galvanized density estimates the steel substrate only; zinc, paint, contents and packaging are excluded. Nominal Schedule does not establish allowable pressure or lifting capacity.
Reference data
Selected NPS 1/2–24. Atlas revision 8 April 2021 cites carbon-steel ASTM A106M / ASME B36.10M-2004. This is a nominal reference snapshot, not verification against the latest contract edition. Empty combinations are unavailable; no interpolation. OD rounding follows the source (for example NPS 10: 273.1 mm).
Atlas Steels — Pipe Dimensions, 2021-04-08 .
Lookup dimensions are a selected Atlas snapshot revised 8 April 2021, whose carbon-steel columns cite ASTM A106M / ASME B36.10M-2004. Examples are NPS 2: OD 60.3 mm, Sch 40 3.91 mm; NPS 10: OD 273.1 mm, Sch 40 9.27 mm; NPS 24: OD 610 mm, Sch 160 59.54 mm. The tool offers carbon-steel Schedule values only, not stainless S schedules. ASME B36.10-2022 is the newer published edition identified in the official reference; this snapshot has not been validated against a legally accessible complete 2022 dimensional table. No dimensions have been changed on that basis. Use the governing contract edition for acceptance; B36.19 applies separately to stainless pipe dimensions.

FAQ
Why does the calculated weight differ from a mill certificate?
This is ideal geometric mass. Certified section properties, measured dimensions, radii, coating and the actual grade can produce a different result. Use the specified product standard and measured mass for acceptance.
Are these values certified for lifting or purchasing acceptance?
No. Check actual grade, tolerances, processing loss and measured mass. These calculators provide estimates, not load ratings or certification.
